From Foundation to Fullness

On Foundation

N0011

1. Foundation is the conceptual framework that shapes our thoughts, desires, and actions in the world. Once foundation is laid, it is established through repeated and continual use.

2. Without foundation, we cannot become mature (Heb. 6:1); we cannot bear lasting fruit (1Cor. 3); we cannot endure trials (Lk. 6:48).

3. Foundation is of perennial concern; it establishes the beginning and the end; it is corporate; it is radical (Heb. 11:10).

4. Foundation is the work of the apostles and prophets with Christ Himself in all his fullness as the cornerstone (Eph. 2:20; 4:11; Rev. 21; 1Cor. 3).

5. Foundation is described as the Word of God (Lk. 6:48) and as Christ Himself (1Cor. 3). It includes repentance (sin and death), faith (faith and reason), baptisms (union with Christ and the Holy Spirit), one’s work and preparation, eschatology (resurrection and the outcome of history, eternal judgment (reward-life and punishment-death) (Heb. 6).

Genesis: Creation, Fall, and Redemption

The account of creation affirms:

1. The divine sovereignty

2. Creation is revelation

3. Fullness and diversity in God

4. Creation is good (without evil)

5. Creation is completed (Sabbath)

The creation of man is:

1. In the image of God

2. With dominion over the earth

3. A body/soul unity

4. A male/female unity

5. A triune personality

6. In covenant, choice of the tree of life or the tree of death

Man’s condition is revealed by a test of faith: has man been seeking the knowledge of God?

1. Believing “you shall not die” implies a denial of God as the infinite Creator (Gen. 3:4).

2. Believing “you shall be like God, knowing good and evil” denies man as creature (Gen. 3:5).
