Principles of Self-Examination

N0041

GENERAL REVELATION
1. Do you believe in the clarity of general revelation and the inexcusability of unbelief?

2. Do you believe that the basic things about God and man, and good and evil are objectively clear to reason?

i. It is self-evident that we think (we form concepts, judgments,
and arguments)
ii. It is self-evident that there are laws of thought (identity,
non-contradiction, and excluded middle), and that reason in itself is
the laws of thought.
iii. Reason is transcendental: it makes thought possible; it is the test
of meaning, which is more basic than truth (if there is no meaning,
there can be no truth); reason is self-attesting and authoritative at the
most basic level.
iv. Reason is the beginning of common ground, which includes integrity,
Rational Presuppositionalism, and the Principle of Clarity. Common
Ground is not neutral ground.
v. One has to neglect, avoid, resist, and deny one’s reason to not see what
is clear. To deny reason is to act against one’s nature, which is self-
destructive.

3. Do you believe it is clear to reason that there must be something eternal?

4. Do you believe it is clear to reason that only some is eternal: that matter
exists, and matter is not eternal; that the soul exists, and the soul is
not eternal?

5. Do you believe that there is a moral law given in human nature, which is
clear and comprehensive, the consequences of which are critical
(individual and cultural, life and death)?

SPECIAL REVELATION
1. Do you believe in the necessity for special revelation as redemptive
revelation in response to the Problem of Evil?

2. Do you believe that only Genesis 1–3 (and what builds on the worldview
of creation–fall–redemption) is special revelation (now written as
Scripture)?

3. Do you believe in the worldview of creation? (What is the worldview of
creation?)

4. Do you believe in the worldview of the fall? (What is the worldview of
the fall?)

5. Do you believe in the worldview of redemption? (What is the worldview
of redemption?)

HISTORIC CHRISTIANITY
1. Do you believe that the Church is the pillar and ground of the truth? That
the Church is the salt and light of the world?

2. Do you believe that the Church is for worship and discipleship?

3. Do you believe that the Holy Spirit leads the Church into all truth,
through the pastor-teachers, after much discussion, in response to
challenges, coming to agreement, summed up in its creeds, for the unity of
the faith?

4. Do you believe the Westminster Confession of Faith is presently thfullest
expression of Historic Christianity, the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Faith,
given for the unity of the Faith?

5. Do you believe that the focus of the Westminster Standards is
doxological, that man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him
forever, in all that by which he makes himself known, in all his works of
creation and providence?
